What the tool produces

A PPDS label has three parts.

Prepacked for direct sale food — packed at the same place it's sold, before the customer orders it — needs the name of the food, a full ingredients list, and the allergens in that list emphasised.

    What a customer would call it. "Chocolate brownie", not "BRW-01".

    Every ingredient, in descending order of weight at the time you made it, with compound ingredients broken out in brackets.

    Allergens emphasised

    Any of the 14 allergens must stand out from the rest of the list — and every time they appear, not just the first.

A sandwich is almost entirely compound ingredients — the bread, the pesto and the mayonnaise each carry their own list, and their own allergens.

Getting a good result

Three things that trip the tool up

It reads what you give it. These are the patterns that produce a label you'd have to fix by hand.

Flattened compound ingredients

Without the brackets we can't tell where the chocolate ends and the next ingredient begins.

Ingredients in the wrong order

sea salt, wheat flour, butter, sugar

The list has to run heaviest first. The tool keeps your order — it can't weigh your mixing bowl.

Brand names instead of ingredients

1 tub of Choc Deluxe

A customer with an allergy can't look up your supplier's product. Copy the declaration from the pack instead.

About this tool

Is this really free?
Yes. No account, no email address, no card. Paste your ingredients, get your label, download the PDF. We hope you'll want somewhere to keep your ingredients afterwards — that's the paid product — but the generator itself stays free.
Does it decide my allergens for me?
No. It reads the words you typed and suggests which of the 14 allergens might be present, showing you the ingredient each suggestion came from. You remove what's wrong and add what's missing. If an allergen isn't written in your text, we can't know about it — for example, a flour milled in a facility that also handles nuts.
What does it do with compound ingredients?
Keep them in brackets as they appear on the supplier's pack — "dark chocolate (cocoa mass, sugar, emulsifier: soya lecithin)" — and the generator keeps that structure, emphasising the allergens inside the brackets too.
Why are allergens in bold capitals rather than a colour?
The rules allow bold, capitals, contrasting colours or underlining. Bold capitals is the option that survives a monochrome thermal printer, a photocopy and a customer reading it in bad light. Colour alone also fails for anyone who can't distinguish it.
Are my ingredients stored anywhere?
Not on our servers. What you type stays in your browser while you use the tool. If you choose to save the label, it comes with you into your new account — and only then.
Does a PPDS label need anything else on it?
PPDS food needs the name of the food and a full ingredients list with allergens emphasised. Other rules can apply depending on your product and how you sell it, and many businesses also add storage or date information. The generator covers the PPDS core — check your own product against the FSA guidance we link to.
